Collaborators

The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN) seeks to raise levels of nutrition and standards of living, to improve agricultural productivity and to better the condition of rural population. The Division of Nutrition and Consumer Protection assesses and monitors nutrition situations, updates population nutrient requirement recommendations, and provides advice and assistance in policy analysis, food and nutrition related strategies and program development, promoting the establishment and implementation of regulatory frameworks for food control and quality assurance systems compatible with international standards, guidelines and recommendations, in particular those of the Codex Alimentarius. FAO-UN also works to build the capacity of developing member countries in food quality and safety throughout the food chain; and providing scientifi c assessment on food safety and related guidance as well as the secretariat for the joint FAO/WHO Codex Alimentarius Commission.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. WHO fulfi ls its objectives through its core functions of providing leadership on matters critical to health and engaging in partnerships where joint action is needed; shaping the research agenda and stimulating the generation, translation and dissemination of valuable knowledge; setting norms and standards and promoting and monitoring their implementation; articulating ethical and evidence-based policy options; providing technical support, catalysing change, and building sustainable institutional capacity; and monitoring the health situation and assessing health trends.

The Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition was established between the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the University of Maryland, USA in April 1996. The Institute is a jointly administered, multidisciplinary research and education program and includes research components from the FDA Centers for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and Veterinary Medicine, and the University of Maryland.
